Google Play is a mystery to me.
I am currently conducting an experiment, where I simply publish games made from free assets, without any marketing and promo, just to see how much it is possible to get organic downloads without any mentions or specific optimizations.
And on my first app after a week now, Google Play is one of the worst ones to perform on it. Only 1 single download. Even Amazon have 2 downloads
Well there are bunch of third party stores, that did not get any download and that is understandable, but I did not expect such results from Google Play.
Slideme is currently best performing on organic downloads on zero visibility, provided over 1k of downloads on the first week.
I will be trying the same for different type of apps (the basket one I've mentioned is for the same purpose), variating from genres to specific features (like having in-app purchases, or platform specific leaderboards as Google Play Services), to see if there are any differences and maybe also trying out different promotions, like tweeting, +1, maybe even advertising on Admob or facebook, etc, just to check what seems to be working better.
For now estimating if I could create 2-3 apps a month, it would take me about 10 month to release all variations and gather some data and then I will be able to share a better report on it
But also don't forget that it is a side hobby project for me for now, so if some more important stuff comes my way, I may have to postpone it
